In September 1959, a small group of business leaders from Carson City, including several club past presidents formed the Carson City Kiwanis Club. The Club began its tradition of leadership in community service from its inception, including the contribution of hands-on service and monetary donations to charitable organizations serving children, youth, the elderly, and the disabled.

Kiwanis is a world-wide service club organization whose primary emphasis is young children. Kiwanis "saves children" through its international Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) prevention program, through various district programs, and through the many activities of local clubs in their own communities.

Kiwanis offers an opportunity for personal involvement in the leadership and improvement of our community, the nation, and the world.  While service is what Kiwanians are known for, the club offers much more.  Meetings and projects provide fellowship.

Kiwanis International has a membership of well over 330,000 members with   Headquarters located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our club belongs to the CAL-NEV-HA District (California-Nevada-Hawaii) which is the largest in the world with more than 20,000 members.

In following the primary objectives of Kiwanis International, our club focuses heavily on the needs of children, the elderly, and disabled.  Among the many projects the Club established are:

  • The Marilyn-Elaine Kiwanis Scholarship

  • The Nuzum Trade Scholarship

  • The Carson City Senior Citizens Center

  • Carson River Cleanup

The Club sponsors Key Club at Carson City High School, Carson City Aktion Club, Boy Scouts Troop 145 and Cub Scouts Troop 145, annual Carson River cleanup, and holiday food baskets.   The Club received a federal grant to establish and maintain "Meals on Wheels" for the Carson City Senior Citizens Center.  The Club built the Friends in Service Helping (FISH) Focus House.

Club members regularly contribute their time and energy by assisting with activities of Carson River Clean-Up, Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Christmas, and helping other non-profit groups through our fund raisers.

Community services are financed primarily through fund raising events during the year that you may recognize.  Our annual Luau and Charles Keller Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the children of our community, an annual Spaghetti Feed to benefit the Carson City Senior Citizens Center Meals on wheels program,  and an annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Carson City Library.

Kiwanis offers an opportunity for your personal involvement in the leadership and improvement of our community. While community service is what Kiwanians are known for, our club offers much more. Meetings and projects provide an arena to develop and use leadership skills, expand business and professional networks, achieve a sense of accomplishment, and enjoy fellowship that is sincere and lasting.
